Xe’ra’s army had been fighting the Burning Legion in the Twisting Nether long before a paladin from Lordaeron fell through a rift. Turalyon and Alleria joined it. She eventually frightened the naaru. He was forged by them. The years were a thousand, unhitched from Stormwind’s calendar, and they ended with him Lightforged and High Exarch.

The Army is the reason he is alive to be regent. It is also the reason Alleria spent an age in a prison of the Light, and the reason his body no longer belongs to an ordinary lifespan. When the Legion fell on Argus, he offered the Army’s allegiance to the Alliance. The Vanguard of the Light in Midnight is the same vow, brought to Quel’Thalas for the Sunwell.

Lothraxion, once a dreadlord, is one of the Army’s captains and one of Turalyon’s companions in that war. The detail matters because the Light’s army was never only human paladins in familiar colors. It was a crusade. He became worthy of it by Xe’ra’s standard. Midnight asks whether that standard still knows his son’s face.
